When it regains its original color (for indicator silica gel) or becomes dry to the touch (for regular silica gel), it is ready.
    • Microwave method: This is suitable for small amounts of silica gel. Put the silica gel in a microwave – safe container and heat it in short intervals, such as 1 – 2 minutes at a time. After each interval, stir the silica gel to ensure even heating. Be careful not to overheat, as it may cause the silica gel to break or lose its effectiveness.

2. Chemical Treatment for Indicator Silica Gel

Indicator silica gel contains dyes that change color with moisture. When recycling indicator silica gel, the dye may need to be treated separately.

Chemical Reagents:

  • For blue indicator silica gel (which often contains cobalt chloride), the use of chemicals to remove or re – activate the dye is required. One approach is to soak the silica gel in a solution of hydrochloric acid and then rinse it thoroughly with water to remove the excess acid.
  • For orange indicator silica gel, a more environmentally friendly alternative to cobalt – based dyes is used. Recycling may involve a similar process of soaking in a mild acid solution and then drying.

Steps:

  1. Soaking: Immerse the indicator silica gel in the appropriate acid solution for a certain period, usually 1 – 2 hours. This helps to remove the dye or re – activate it.
  2. Rinsing: After soaking, rinse the silica gel several times with clean water to remove the acid and any remaining dye residues.
  3. Drying: Follow the heating method described above to dry the silica gel and restore its moisture – absorbing ability.

Quality Control after Recycling

After recycling the pure silica gel, it’s crucial to conduct quality control to ensure its effectiveness.

Moisture – Absorbing Capacity Test:

  • Place a known amount of recycled silica gel in a sealed container with a small amount of water. Weigh the container before and after a specific period, such as 24 hours. Calculate the amount of moisture absorbed by the silica gel. If it meets the standard moisture – absorbing capacity for new silica gel, it can be considered suitable for reuse.

Visual Inspection:
